What Is Facelift Surgery?

Facelift surgery, or rhytidectomy, is a cosmetic procedure that addresses signs of aging in the midface, lower face, and neck. Over time, the natural aging process weakens the soft tissues and suspensory ligaments in the face, increasing skin laxity and causing muscles and fat pads to shift downward. This results in sagging skin, jowls, and often excess skin and fat under the chin.

Facelift surgery addresses these concerns and more, removing excess skin, repositioning fat pads, and tightening muscles to give you a smoother, more youthful-looking face and neck.

Am I a Candidate for a Facelift?

Facelift surgery is ideal for women and men who experience age- and lifestyle-related cosmetic concerns on the lower two-thirds of the face (from the cheeks to the neck).

Ideal candidates for a facelift are non-smokers who are in good general health and have realistic expectations about their results.

What Are the Benefits of Facelift Surgery?

Facelifts are an excellent solution for treating age-related skin concerns on the lower and midface. A facelift can benefit women and men who want to address symptoms of aging, including:

  • Skin laxity
  • Fine lines
  • Deep wrinkles or folds
  • Fat that has migrated downward
  • Jowls (sagging skin and fat along the jawline)
  • Double chin (excess skin and fat on the neck)

What Are My Facelift Options?

Dr. Kronowitz offers three facelift options, which can be customized to address your individual concerns.

Traditional Facelift

A traditional or full facelift tightens the midface and lower face, including addressing jowling and lax skin on the upper neck. During a conventional facelift, several small incisions are strategically placed in the hairline, near the ears, and under the chin. The skin is lifted, and the subcutaneous fat, muscle, and fibrous tissue that makes up the superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS) layer of your face is repositioned and tightened. The skin is then carefully redraped, excess tissue is trimmed away, and the incisions are closed.

Deep Plane Facelift

While a traditional facelift adjusts the superficial level of your face, a deep plane facelift offers more comprehensive correction. During the surgery, the ligaments of the SMAS layer are released, allowing them to be tightened along with other tissues and facial muscles found in the deeper planes of your face. Fat pads that have moved out of place may also be repositioned, restoring volume to your cheeks. The result is a stronger underlying structure for your face and a youthful, natural-looking appearance.

Mini Facelift

A mini facelift is best for patients who need mild correction or want a more subtle result. It is commonly chosen by patients who wish to address early signs of aging in the face but are not yet candidates for a full facelift. It can also be used as a preventative treatment to slow down the effects of aging and typically requires a shorter recovery period than other facelift types.

How Should I Prepare For My Facelift Surgery?

Before your facelift, you may be asked to complete lab testing or modify your medication and vitamin regimen. If you smoke or use nicotine products, you should stop at least six weeks before your surgery and be willing to abstain for the duration of your recovery, as smoking can affect your ability to heal. Additionally, you should avoid aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs, and herbal supplements.

Once your facelift has been scheduled, we will give you personalized instructions on how to prepare for surgery to ensure a safe procedure and a healthy recovery.

How Is a Facelift Performed?

A facelift is an outpatient procedure performed using intravenous sedation or general anesthesia, depending on which type of facelift you are receiving and your individual treatment plan. Dr. Kronowitz will make strategically placed incisions, allowing him to manipulate and tighten the facial tissue and muscles with internal sutures. Once this step is completed, excess skin will be excised, and your skin will be carefully redraped before the incisions are closed, leaving you with a smoother, more youthful appearance. Your face is wrapped in a compression bandage for support and to help minimize swelling, and you’re taken to the recovery area.

What Can I Expect From My Facelift Recovery?

Recovery from facelift surgery varies from person to person and depends on how involved the surgery is. Because the procedure is performed using anesthesia, you will need someone to drive you home after your surgery and stay with you for the first 24 hours.

You can expect to experience moderate to significant bruising and swelling during the initial days of your recovery. You may also experience numbing, tingling, and itchiness around your incisions as you heal. Any post-operative discomfort and pain can be remedied with prescription or over-the-counter pain medication and cold compresses.

Bandages will be placed over the incision sites to protect the area and aid in healing. Sutures are usually removed within 10 to 14 days after your facelift procedure. You should sleep on your back with your upper body elevated during recovery to minimize swelling.

Most facelift patients can return to work and resume everyday activity after two weeks of recovery. However, you must refrain from any strenuous activities until Dr. Kronowitz clears you.

Dr. Kronowitz will schedule post-operative check-ups to assess your recovery progress and ensure you are healing well. He will give you detailed instructions on caring for your incisions and how to gently and carefully cleanse your face during your recovery. It is essential that you follow these instructions to ensure proper healing and optimal results.

Do Facelifts Leave Scars?

The incisions made during a facelift are made in discreet locations to reduce visible scarring as much as possible. They are typically made close to the hairline, near the ears, and under the chin, and are hidden in the natural contours of your face. Scars from a facelift will be more noticeable during recovery but will fade quickly and can be treated with silicone scar strips, creams, or gels to further minimize their appearance.

What Can I Expect From My Facelift Results?

After your facelift surgery, you will have significant bruising and swelling, which will hide most of your results. Your results will begin to be more noticeable as the swelling and bruising diminish and will continue to develop over the next few months. Your final results can take up to six months to be fully visible.

After your facelift, you can look forward to a more youthful and rejuvenated facial aesthetic that can help you feel more confident in your appearance. Your results are long-lasting; however, be aware that the natural aging process will continue, and you may eventually need a “touch-up.”

Is a Facelift Permanent?

The results of a facelift typically last for a decade or more. However, the natural effects of aging are inevitable, so you may eventually notice some skin laxity and wrinkles. Adhering to a healthy diet, staying hydrated, and investing in a quality skin care regimen will go a long way toward keeping your facelift results looking gorgeous, longer.

What Procedures Can Be Combined With a Facelift?

While a facelift provides stunning results when performed alone, many patients choose to add other facial procedures to further enhance their results.

Because facelift surgery addresses only the lower two-thirds of the face, women and men who suffer from age- and lifestyle-related issues in the upper third of the face (from the cheeks to the hairline) will likely require additional procedures for more comprehensive facial rejuvenation. Combining other facial procedures such as neck lift surgery, eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty), and brow lift surgery (forehead lift) with your facelift helps you achieve a more balanced, natural appearance.

What Are the Risks Associated With a Facelift?

Facelifts are considered safe when performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon who has extensive experience in facial rejuvenation procedures. However, there are some risks associated with facelift surgery, including:

  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Fluid accumulation (seroma)
  • Changes in skin sensation
  • Poor wound healing
  • Skin irregularities and discoloration
  • Hair loss, either temporary or permanent, at the incision sites
  • Scarring
  • Injury of facial nerves
  • Asymmetry

Complications are rare, but if you experience any concerning symptoms, please contact our office as soon as possible.

How Much Does a Facelift Cost in Houston?

The cost of a facelift in Houston will depend on your unique treatment plan, including the type of facelift, the degree of correction needed, and whether you add complementary procedures to your surgery. Dr. Kronowitz will provide you with an accurate cost estimate during your facelift consultation.
