All you need to do is look at the stunning results women achieve with breast augmentation surgery and there’s no question as to why breast augmentation is consistently one of the most popular cosmetic surgical procedures.
During breast augmentation, synthetic implants are placed into the breasts to create a larger, fuller, and more shapely appearance. While this surgical procedure is very straightforward, there are several choices that must be made beforehand.
The most important choice (and the most common question) is, “What implant should I choose?”
Below, we will explore the different implant options to choose from so that you can better understand which may be right for you.
What Are My Breast Implant Options?
Choosing the right implant goes beyond simply picking the type and size of the implant. There is also the shape and texture of the implant to consider.
Implant Type
Breast implants can be filled with silicone gel or a saline (salt water) solution.
It is important to note that each implant material has its benefits. Silicone implants are generally soft and feel like natural breast tissue. Additionally, silicone implants tend to look more natural than saline implants.
However, saline implants are easier to adjust since they are filled after the silicone shells have been placed in the breast pocket. This also allows for a smaller incision compared to silicone implants.
Implant Shape
Besides the implant type and size, you will need to choose which implant shape you want. Implants can either be round or anatomical (teardrop) in shape.
Round implants are round (spherical) in shape and often have a smooth texture (although, it is possible for them to have a textured surface).
Anatomically shaped implants, also known as gummy bear implants, have a thinner top and a wider base (like the shape of a teardrop). This shape mimics the slope of a natural breast, helping augmented breasts look more natural.
Anatomical implants most often (and should) have a rough, textured surface.
Implant Texture
Surface texture plays an important role, as this will determine whether or not the implant can rotate in the breast pocket.
Your breast implants can either be textured or smooth.
A smooth implant will be able to rotate freely; a textured implant will adhere to the breast tissue, keeping it in position.
While it makes little difference whether a round implant rotates, since a round implant provides equal fullness to the upper and lower poles of the breast, rotation of a shaped implant must be avoided to maintain the natural slope of the breast. This is why shaped implants should always have a textured surface.
